Room 45: Guillermo García Cruz

December 12, 2019 - January 11, 2020

Programa Taide presents Room 45: Guillermo García Cruz, individual exhibition of works by the Uruguayan artist. Framed in the context of Room 45, a project developed in collaboration with Around Lounges, the exhibition brings together a selection of paintings on different supports, as well as photographs and sculptural pieces characteristic of a unique visual vocabulary.

With an apparently non-representational aesthetic, linked to the tradition of Latin American geometric abstraction, the pictorial series Untitled Spaces nevertheless refers to real architectural spaces, plans and elements taken from artistic institutions, which are subtly referred to through the combination of neutral backgrounds with straight lines drawn in the fluorescent tone that constitutes the hallmark of the artist in his last stage.

Continuing with this line of conceptual research, the concrete blocks —intervened and translated into García Cruz's personal language— pose, with their location outside the framework of the gallery, the art center or the museum, possible alternatives in the relationship of the object artistic with its place of exhibition, thus questioning the traditional mechanisms of validation of the work in the context of contemporary art.

Guillermo García Cruz was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1988. Trained at the Instituto Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Montevideo, he continued his artistic training at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, George Washington University and the Washington Studio School in Washington DC.

In 2015, the artist founded MAG, the Multidisciplinary Space of Visual Arts in the Prado, Montevideo, Uruguay, while kept developing his work as a teacher at the Visual Arts Degree at the Catholic University of Uruguay. Since 2012, his work has been exhibited in individual exhibitions in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Washington DC, New York, Madrid, Lisbon and Tianjin.
